Study in Ireland and discover high‑quality education, a welcoming culture, and strong opportunities for international students. Ireland offers globally recognised universities and colleges, a friendly environment, and a smooth pathway to work opportunities during and after your studies.
Why Study in Ireland?
Ireland Student Visa (Non‑EEA Nationals)
Most Sri Lankan students will require a student visa (Type D) to study in Ireland unless your nationality is visa‑exempt for entry — but you must still register with Irish immigration and apply for permission to remain.
Key Student Visa & Permission Requirements
To apply for an Irish student visa and immigration permission (typically Stamp 2):
– Acceptance letter from an eligible Irish institution on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP)
– Proof of sufficient funds (minimum €10,000 per year) plus tuition fees
– Evidence of private health insurance
– Valid passport and supporting documents, including proof of accommodation
– English language proficiency (as required by the institution)
After arrival in Ireland, you must register with the Irish Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) to receive your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) showing Stamp 2 permission.
Work While Studying in Ireland
International students with Stamp 2 immigration permission may work part‑time to support living costs while studying.
Work Conditions
- Up to 20 hours per week during the academic term
- Up to 40 hours per week during holidays (June–September and 15 Dec–15 Jan)
To work legally, you must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) and obtain a PPS number (Personal Public Service number) required for employment and taxes.
Post‑Study Work Opportunities
Ireland offers a Third Level Graduate Scheme allowing international graduates to remain in Ireland for employment search or work after completing their studies.
Post‑Graduation Stay Options
– Level 8 (Bachelor’s) graduates: eligible for the Third Level Graduate Scheme (Stamp 1G) for up to 12 months
– Level 9 & 10 (Master’s/PhD) graduates: eligible for Stamp 1G for up to 24 months after completing studies
Stamp 1G permits full‑time work while you search for a job or apply for longer‑term work permits in Ireland.
Bringing Dependents to Ireland
Ireland generally does not allow dependents on a standard student visa (Stamp 2) to automatically join the student.
When Dependents May Be Eligible
– PhD students and some postgraduate students in higher education may apply for family reunification under certain conditions.
– Dependents such as a spouse or children under 18 must apply for a separate long‑stay visa (Join Family/Type D) and show sufficient financial support for living costs while in Ireland.
Approval is assessed by Irish immigration on a case‑by‑case basis and is not automatic.
