Residence Permit Requirement

If you plan to study in Sweden for more than three months, you must apply for a residence permit for studies. This is the official permit that allows you to live and learn in Sweden.

How to Apply

You must apply before you travel to Sweden, usually at the Swedish Embassy or Consulate responsible for your region. For Sri Lankan applicants, this is generally handled via the Sweden Embassy in New Delhi, India (migration section appointment required), where interviews, fingerprinting, and biometrics take place.

When to Apply (Intakes)

Scholarships and affordaSwedish universities typically have two main intakes:
February intake (Spring semester)
September intake (Autumn semester)
Starting your application early — ideally 3–4 months before the intake — helps ensure timely processing
ble living options make education accessible.

Student Residence Permit Requirements

To qualify for your study residence permit, you must show:
– A Letter of Acceptance from a Swedish university/college.
– Proof of sufficient funds to cover living costs and tuition.
– Valid passport for the duration of your stay.
– Health insurance (as required).
– You usually attend an interview (and provide biometrics) when you submit your application at the embassy in India.

Student Dependents in Sweden

Sweden allows family members to accompany you, but conditions depend on your program level:

Who Can Join You?

Spouse / cohabiting partner

Children under 18

They can apply for a residence permit for family members at the same time as your student permit or afterwards — but the permit must be issued before entry to Sweden.

Benefits for Dependents

– Your accompanying family can live in Sweden for the same period as your study permit.

Spouse/partner may be eligible to work full‑time once in Sweden.

Children can attend school in Sweden under the Swedish education system.

Important: Family permits must be granted before travel; you cannot normally enter Sweden first on a student permit and then apply inside Sweden for family.

Work While Studying

International students with a valid Swedish residence permit for studies can work while studying — typically up to 20 hours/week during semesters and full‑time during official breaks.
